(326 words)

James talks to Hunter about organ donation and about the importance of bracing herself for unfortunate outcomes.

Hunter sees him opening and closing his mouth but she hears nothing.

It is like the mute button is pressed.

The doctor comes, a cautious smile.

Hunter grabs his hands and kisses them, ”You saved my daughter!”

James watches from a distance, his face as if he has eaten a bunch of lemons.

The son of a bitch is sad the girl survived.

Why would he care? She is not his daughter.

She is just an obstacle. She is standing in the way between him and Hunter’s money.

If she dies, money goes all to him.

The car accident was planned perfectly. And everything went according to the plan.

Till now.

Hunter pushes the door open, goes into her daughter’s room. She kneels on the floor, touches her daughter’s face, hands trembling, tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Open your eyes Diana…open your eyes sweetheart…mommy is here!”

Diana slightly moves her right hand but her eyes remain closed.

The doctor enters the room, gently puts his hands on Hunter ‘s shoulders.

“She is doing a little better, but it is still soon to tell. Next 24 hours will be critical. She can hear you but please do not pressure her, she needs to get some rest.”

Hunter nods her head in agreement, kisses her daughter on the forehead, rises to her feet and exits the room with the doctor.

She shares the good news with James who wears the mask of the happy stepdad.

They hug tightly. Behind Hunter’s back, James takes off the mask of the happy stepdad.

Hunter does not see the devil eyes smiling behind her back.

When Hunter goes to the chapel near the hospital to pray for Dianna, James enters Dianna’s room.

He slowly approaches the bed like a snake approaches its prey.

“Goodbye, Dianna,” he whispers as he pulls the plug.
